Based on a series of highly successful books, Dexter ran for eight seasons on Showtime, and told of Dexter Morgan, a vigilante serial killer targeting other murderers. Following its 2013 conclusion, the series was rebooted for a limited-series sequel in 2020, entitled Dexter: New Blood.
Now, Showtime has decided it’s time to explore the origins of the man with the questionable morals, in Dexter: Original Sin. Boasting a highly impressive cast, we get our first neon-soaked look at the action in a brand-new teaser.
The new series takes us to Miami in 1991, where young Dexter Morgan has just undertaken a job with the local CSI unit. Of course, any fan of the franchise will know, carnage soon ensues, as Dexter doesn’t look kindly upon those who commit the violent crimes he investigates.
Christian Slater, Patrick Dempsey, and Molly Brown are all seen prominently, whilst Irish actor Patrick Gibson has been cast in the titular role. Slater will play Dexter’s father Harry Morgan, and Brown his sister Debra. Patrick Dempsey’s role remains unknown at present.
However, it is the presence of Sarah Michelle Gellar that will undoubtedly excite genre fans the most. Gellar joined the series earlier this year in a “special guest star” capacity, and will play Tanya Martin, head of the Miami CSI unit.
This marks Gellar’s second collaboration with Paramount+, following 2023’s Wolf Pack series. Arguably, her inclusion in an already established franchise like Dexter is a higher profile gig, and fans are hopeful this will be the scream queen’s ticket to bigger things.
However, Original Sin is not the only new chapter in the Dexter franchise that’s on the horizon. Dexter: Resurrection is expected to see the return of series star Michael C. Hall as the title character, however, details on this project remain under wraps.
Dexter: Original Sin will premiere on Paramount+ on December 13th 2024, and you can see the first short teaser below:
