“She’s alive…. ALIVE!”
Yes, according to director Maggie Gyllenhaal’s Instagram, both Frankenstein’s Monster and his bride are very much alive.
The actress and filmmaker shared a first look at costume and make-up tests, revealing Christian Bale’s role in her upcoming Monsterverse film The Bride. Previously, the former Batman actor had been cast in an “undisclosed” capacity, but the test footage reveals Bale is taking on the iconic role of Frankenstein’s monster.
Similarly, a second image reveals Jessie Buckley as the titular character. Buckley, re-teaming with Gyllenhaal following 2021’s The Lost Daughter, previously had been the only actor whose role was disclosed.
Other actors in The Bride’s impressive ensemble include Penelope Cruz, Annette Benning, Peter Sarsgaard, and Julianne Hough, their roles remaining a mystery.
In recently released plot details, we learned that Gyllenhaal’s adaption will be set in 1930’s Chicago. Buckley will star as a recently murdered woman re-animated as a companion for Bale. However, her headstrong ways spark an unexpected cultural movement.
With Netflix having recently departed the project, The Bride will now be distributed by Warner Bros Pictures, with Universal providing the primary funding. Production is currently underway, with the film expected to release on October 2nd 2025.
