In what feels like perfect casting, Nicolas Cage is playing Dracula in director Chris McKay’s horror-comedy Renfield—and we’ve finally got our first look at the character, courtesy of some exclusive set photos from People.
Cage’s Count is looking resplendent in a red velvet suit with a medallion reminiscent of Bela Lugosi’s costuming in the 1931 adaptation of Dracula. The make-up has a little touch of Christopher Lee’s Dracula to it, and Cage is also rocking some gnarly yellow nails.
Said to be a “modern-day adventure story that is comedic in tone,” Renfield is based on an original pitch from The Walking Dead creator Robert Kirkman. The film centres on the titular Renfield (Nicholas Hoult), who has grown sick and tired of his centuries as Dracula’s lackey. The henchman finds a new lease on life and maybe even redemption when he falls for feisty, perennially angry traffic cop Rebecca Quincy (Awkwafina).
Renfield’s cast also includes Ben Schwartz, Adrian Martinez, Shohreh Aghdashloo, and Bess Rouss. Ryan Ridley (Rick and Morty) wrote the script.
