After being considered “lost” for over a year, Legendary’s reboot of The Toxic Avenger was handed a lifeline in January.
With every major distributor considering the re-imaging of Troma’s classic “too brutal,” Cineverse picked up the project when it seemed all hope was lost.
Willing to release The Toxic Avenger unrated, a domestic release was secured.
Now, with the movie rescued, we have our first look at actor Peter Dinklage in full make-up as Toxie! Looking worlds away from his iconic turn in Game of Thrones, the actor’s diminutive stature challenges established anti-hero norms, all whilst he looks particularly awesome.
In a newly released logline, Legendary Pictures and Cineverse state:
“In this bold new chapter of the classic midnight movie franchise created by Lloyd Kaufman and Troma Entertainment, a shocking accident transforms downtrodden janitor Winston Gooze into a mutant vigilante. Armed with his signature mop, the unlikely hero battles freaks, gangsters and corrupt CEOs while trying to save his relationship with his son.”
Alongside Dinklage, The Toxic Avenger has secured an impressive ensemble cast, including; Kevin Bacon, Elijah Wood, Taylour Paige, Julia Davis, and Jacob Tremblay.
Of Toxie’s new look, writer-director said:
“The goal was to try to stay true to the vibe of Lloyd [Kaufman’s] original Jennifer Aspinall/Mitch Cohen creature, with some influence from the Toxic Crusaders cartoon’s look, while also trying to do something new and weird and lovable with Toxie’s design. I love what Millennium FX did with it — part human, part mutant, all heart.”
Alongside our first look at Dinklage, The Toxic Avenger was also issued an official release date. The movie will hit screens across the US and Canada on August 29th 2025!
It is currently unclear if Cineverse also plan to release the reboot in other markets simultaneously. However, we’ll keep a lookout and let you know as soon as we have clarification.
