Clown in a Cornfield was undoubtedly one of the biggest horror sleeper hits of the year.
On a budget of just $1 million, the film managed an impressive final tally of $22 million at the box-office.
This has cemented it as one of IFC and Shudder’s most successful releases to date.
Based on the hit horror novel of the same name by Adam Cesare, Clown in a Cornfield takes us to the quaint town of Kettle Springs. Once a thriving export hub for their world-famous maple syrup, the community has fallen on hard times since the syrup factory burned down. Things are made much worse when a string of murders begin, seemingly committed by the town’s beloved mascot Frendo the Clown.
The film adaption by Tucker and Dale Vs. Evil filmmaker Eli Craig went over well with fans. It was praised for its gory set pieces, and as a fun throwback to the campy slasher movies of yester-year. As well as being a sleeper hit at the box-office, Clown in a Cornfield was also a major hit on physical media.
Horror fans flocked to buy blu-ray, steelbook, and DVD editions, meaning the film made an even tidier profit when all was said and done… However, it appears Frendo isn’t finished yet.
We can confirm that Clown in a Cornfield will join several other recent hits and make its debut on VHS! Although a format seemingly dead by the late nineties, physical media collectors have caused a considerable surge in VHS sales of late, leading to studios issuing “specialist” releases for genre fare.
Clown in a Cornfield will retail at $45 per tape for a clamshell case, or $30 for the standard slipcover VHS. The film will be pared down to a 4:3 aspect ratio for “optimal VHS viewing.”
