“Because you were here…”
The Strangers are back, and we’re about to find out how it all began.
The trailer for The Strangers: Chapter One dropped online on Friday March 1st, and contained a welcome surprise for fans.
At first resembling a retread of the 2008 original, the Renny Harlin helmed flick introduces us to the titular villains and their chosen prey. All The Strangers’ usual tricks are here, such as spying on unaware occupants, lurking in dark spaces, and of course, quite a bit of skill with edged weapons.
However, just when we think this is a straight-forward reboot, the trailer pulls the rug by informing us The Strangers: Chapter One is actually a prequel!
On screen text invites us to “See how The Strangers became The Strangers,” meaning previous assertions that Chapter One was the beginning of a fresh reboot were incorrect. Evidently the 2008 original and its 2018 sequel are still canon, and Chapter One will act as the third official instalment.
An origin story for the terrifying trio was not on anyone’s radar, and the revelation has stirred up a lot more excitement for the film and its planned sequels.
Promising plenty of high-stakes battles to the death, the trailer has been warmly received by audiences, boding well for Chapter One’s box-office potential.
With two sequels already filmed, Lionsgate clearly have great confidence in the property. Said to “blaze a new path” for The Strangers franchise, we are eager to see where this will all go.
The Strangers: Chapter One will release on May 17th 2024, and will hopefully begin a new and terrifying era for the trio.
