Would it shock you if we were to tell you that the planned TV series based around The Purge will not focus on the Purge at all? Instead, the series is going to delve in to the lives of people outside the time of the Purge, showing what happens during the other 364 days of the year. The franchise’s creator James DeMonaco has said:
“It will reveal to the fans what happens the other 364 days of the year and how that law affects people.
It will be interesting to show those arcs, those dramatic and complex arcs that get people to where they pick up a gun or a knife and kill someone else. I think there’s something cool that we can do with the real estate of TV, 10 hours, potentially”
The decision to focus on the backstory of those carrying out the crimes on Purge night and seeing what has lead them to murder another person (or people) is certainly appealing. The TV show would have to do something entirely different if it were to appeal to fans – because who wants to watch a 10-hour killing spree? – and it seems as though those behind it understand that.
As well as this planned expansion to TV in 2018, The Purge 4 will be with us in 2018, too. We’re excited for more and hope you are, too!
