Leigh Whannell (The Invisible Man, Upgrade) was originally in talks to direct Universal’s new take on The Wolfman, but he’s no longer involved in the project. Deadline reports that Derek Cianfrance (Blue Valentine, The Place Beyond the Pines) has taken over directorial duties and will also write the script!
Wolfman will reunite Cianfrance with Blue Valentine and The Place Beyond the Pines star Ryan Gosling who, in addition to starring in the new project, reportedly approached Cianfrance with his idea for the film, which won the director over. Plot details are under wraps, but Deadline notes that this is “believed to be a modern take and not a period piece like the one starring Benicio del Toro.”
“Horror movies were my first love—my entry into what cinema was capable of narratively, psychologically and aesthetically,” Cianfrance said in a statement. “Coupled with the opportunity to collaborate with Ryan again, this is truly a dream come true. I’m thrilled and inspired to work with the good folks at Blumhouse and Universal to bring this monster back to life in our collective unconscious.”
