Given the stellar success of 2022’s Prey, it is little surprise to anyone that 20th Century Studios are eager to continue expanding the Predator universe. After all, Prey has become the only horror film in history to win an Emmy.
So, we are delighted, but not surprised to learn that Dan Trachtenberg will take the reins once more for another stand-alone/spin-off Predator outing.
Entitled Badlands, Trachtenberg is currently the only sure thing that is known about the project. Reportedly a “high priority” project for 20th Century Studios, plot details are being kept a closely guarded secret. The only line given to drum up excitement is the assurance that this will be another Predator project.
The commencement of Badlands follows Prey, a Hulu original film, breaking various records for the streaming service. Similar success was achieved overseas when the Predator prequel made a killing on Disney+.
The long-awaited prequel tells the story of a Comanche tribe beset by the alien beast in the year 1719. With praise going to the writing, performances, and special effects, it was soon lamented that Prey would’ve thrived if given a theatrical run.
To that end, a huge question mark regarding Badlands is if 20th Century Studios will allow the Predator to return to the big screen. The success of Prey has led the studio to rethink several direct-to-streaming films, most notably Alien: Romulus.
So, although we know precious little, there is palpable excitement for Badlands. We will we keeping an eye on this project and report any further developments as soon as we can.
