CHUCK RUSSELL’S “WITCHBOARD” REMAKE DEBUTS UNIQUE FIRST TRAILER

Posted on: August 4th, 2023

It’s been some time since we reported an update on the rather surprising Witchboard remake helmed by director Chuck Russell. All seemed to go quiet after filming was announced three months ago, but now, thanks to 2023’s San Diego Comic-Con we have the ultimate update in the form of a trailer! It certainly looks… interesting!

With a cast including Stranger Things 4 star Jamie Campbell Bower and Ozark’s Charlie Tahan, and despite having a director with serious horror credentials, Witchboard has somehow managed to fly under most people’s radar.

The trailer introduces us to the very atmospheric looking world of the New Orleans French Quarter. as we witness Campbell-Bower play a somewhat eccentric psychic enticing a young group to use an “original” witchboard.

From the trailer it is quite clear Russell is taking an altogether different approach to the material. Vetoing the Ouija board’s established origins, Russell’s Witchboard leans heavily into that title, establishing the board as something once belonging to a coven of French Quarter witches, who still have a claim to it from beyond the grave.

This is about as much plot as can be taken from the short clip, as the remaining minute is filled with a supercut of disturbing and downright trippy imagery. We see bizarre winged demons, ancient magic rituals, our lead actress trapped in a tank of water… and most disturbing of all, a man pulling his own face off.

Currently without a release date, the brief clip ends with a “2024” title card, meaning we can assume this whacky looking flick is coming sometime within the next year. What do all these strange scenes mean? We can’t wait to see the movie and find out!
