Since the initial announcement of “discussions” last year, 28 Years Later has been continually gaining momentum.

With Sony Pictures winning a fierce bidding war for the property and securing three new movies, things have been moving rather fast.

28 Years Later, the first of the proposed trilogy, has already secured the involvement of Danny Boyle as director, screenwriter Alex Garland, and Cillian Murphy returning in a producing capacity. As we last reported, Killing Eve star Jodie Comer had recently been approached to star.

Now, it appears we have our first update on the sequel! Yes, that’s right, before the first has gone before cameras, the second is being prepped. This speaks of Sony Pictures having huge confidence in the property, and given the buzz recent announcements have generated, we can’t blame them.

According to reports, Nia DaCosta, best known for 2021’s Candyman legacy sequel, is in negotiations to direct a sequel to 28 Years Later.

When promoting Candyman, DaCosta spoke of her intention to carve a prolific career in the horror genre. Given the universally positive response to her legacy sequel, that seemed a very real possibility.

Now, entering the critically and commercially lauded world of the 28 franchise is a huge step towards DaCosta’s goal.

So, the future looks bloody and bright for 28 Years Later. We’ll bring you any further updates on Boyle’s reboot and its sequels as we have them.
