“BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER” STAR NICHOLAS BRENDON PASSES AWAY

Posted on: March 21st, 2026

He was the king of the sentimental monologue, so we’re devastated to learn that Buffy the Vampire Slayer star Nicholas Brendon has died.

Nicholas “Nicky” Brendon Schultz was born on April 12th 1971, one of a pair of identical twins. He spent his childhood years longing to be a professional baseball player, but was impeded by a severe stutter.

As a teen, Brendon turned to acting and memorizing lines as a means to tackle his speech impediment. After this period, he’d leave and return to Hollywood multiple times, even intending to study medicine at one point.

After a bit part in 1995’s Children of the Corn III: Urban Harvest, Brendon was once again intending to quit Hollywood. However, his reluctant agent received a pilot script entitled Buffy the Vampire Slayer. Although the show was for the relatively unknown WB Network, Brendon was encouraged to try for the part of Xander Harris.

Brendon would ultimately win the role of the wise-cracking teen, and, despite having to reshoot the pilot, Buffy would ultimately make it to air with a 12-episode season.

Unbeknownst to all involved, Buffy the Vampire Slayer would become a hit. The series would span seven seasons and make stars out of its main cast. Although Brendon would not reach the lofty heights of the likes of Sarah Michelle Gellar and Allyson Hannigan, he became recognisable.

After landing the lead in the cult horror-comedy Psycho Beach Party, Brendon would snag the short-lived sitcom Kitchen Confidential. Despite working consistently with voice work, guest spots and convention appearances, Brendon wouldn’t bag another consistent role until appearing as Kevin Lynch in Criminal Minds. He would recur in this role for seven years, before personal issues caused his dismissal from the show.

Away from his career, Brendon struggled with alcohol and substance abuse following the conclusion of Buffy. In more recent years, the actor had accumulated a series of arrests due to disorderly behaviour. Most notably, Brendon stormed off the Dr. Phil show, when expected to discuss his troubles with alcohol.

Brendon also suffered from cauda equina syndrome, requiring several spinal surgeries and causing minor paralysis in his later years. This was aggravated by a heart attack in 2022, which resulted in a diagnosis of congenital heart failure.

Brendon’s death was announced on March 20th 2026, with his family noting the actor had died in his sleep from natural causes.

Tributes were subsequently paid by co-stars Sarah Michelle Gellar, Allyson Hannigan, Emma Caulfield, Charisma Carpenter, James Marsters, and David Boreanez.

Nicholas Brendon was 54 years old.

Rest in peace, Nicky.
