Anyone who’s witnessed British director Toby Wilkins’ first horror feature, Splinter should agree how frighteningly effective it was. Sadly that wasn’t the case when he followed it up with 2009’s ghastly supernatural sequel, The Grudge 3. Nevertheless, giving him the benefit of the doubt I’m silently convinced his next film, iNvasion will win him a few of the brownie points he lost along the way.
Penned by Paul A. Birkett (Altitude) and Jason Bourque (Crash Site), iNvasion is a young adult-oriented sci-fi thriller with a premise that sounds like it can be filed alongside the likes of The Ring and The Faculty: A viral video begins converting residents of a small town into pawns of an alien intelligence until a group of high school seniors decide it’s time to fight back.
With the film’s casting process already in motion, principal photography is expected to begin in Vancouver early next year.
Commenting on the project, Wilkins says “iNvasion is one of those rare scripts that presents a truly original take on a classic theme with a perfect blend of the genres I most love to explore. A thought provoking sci-fi thrill-ride.”
iNvasion will be produced Escape Factory’s Ian Birkett and DNF Pictures’ Dean Altit.
If you still haven’t caught Wilkins’ debut feature Splinter now is a better time than any to discover its greatness.
