It has long been promised, but after a painfully slow gestation period, fans feared a film adaption of the smash hit video game Five Nights at Freddy’s may never come. However, it is barrelling toward our screens full force, with Universal and Blumhouse offering us our first footage after unveiling the teaser trailer May 17th!
Beginning in the style of an old VHS tape, a manager welcomes us to the bustling Freddy Fazzbear’s Pizzeria and informs us we are the new night-time security guard. She reveals the film’s star attractions, animatronic fuzzies Freddy, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy before promising we’ll have “so much fun!”
From here the remaining 30 seconds is a series of quick cuts giving us a terrifying glimpse into the bright, neon-flared world that awaits us. One poor soul is strapped to a whirring torture device that’d look right at home in a Saw movie and our animatronic villains’ electronic laughs echo throughout.
Perfectly creating iconic television monitor shots from the game series, the trailer continues to show us the cast we’ve heard so much about. Elizabeth Lail drags herself along the restaurant’s tiled floor, Kit Connor Sterling hides in the kid’s ball pit and Matthew Lillard looks ever-so-slightly sinister as he sits behind a desk.
The perfect taste of what’s to come, the teaser was accompanied by five pre-release posters. The first being a group shot of our maniacal mascots, the others being individual character shots for each one. Universal sure do know how to market a horror film, don’t they?
Five Nights at Freddy’s is set to release October 27th 2023, both in theatres and on streaming service Peacock. You can check out the first 40 second teaser below:
