Blumhouse Productions has officially closed a deal that gives the studio the exclusive rights to produce any future entries in the Saw franchise.
As we reported just a few weeks ago, Blumhouse were the top contenders to acquire the 50% stake in the series owned by Twisted Pictures.
The acquisition will reunite the franchise with its original creators James Wan and Leigh Whannell. Whannell has been a frequent collaborator with the studio over the years, whilst Wan formed a merger with his Atomic Monster label in 2023.
Lionsgate still retains 50% of the Saw IP, and will remain aboard to distribute any future films via their long-standing deal with Blumhouse.
Of selling their share of the series, executive producer Mark Burg said he wished to “move on and tell new stories.” His partner in Twisted Pictures, Oren Koules remarked that he “felt it was time to pass the baton.”
Of course, if industry chatter is to be believed, Burg and Koules are no longer on speaking terms, with their partnership crumbling due to disagreements on the direction of Saw XI. The discourse saw the highly-anticipated eleventh entry postponed, before eventually being cancelled altogether earlier this year.
What exactly happened may never be known, but the fallout was evidently enough for the producers to sever their involvement with Saw and part ways.
To that end, it seems unlikely that the already-prepped Saw XI is part of the Blumhouse deal. Reliable sources are reporting that it is the studio’s intention to lure Wan and Whannell back to the property they created.
