Best Selling Console Horror Games

Posted on: May 15th, 2024

The video gaming industry continues to show impressive revenue figures each year, and it’s one sector able to thrive in a challenging economic environment. One of the reasons why gaming is so successful is its ability to diversify and cater for all players.

There are more genres of games available than ever, with new concepts hitting the shelves on a regular basis. Customers can choose sports titles, classic war games, casino options where they can employ a slots strategy and many more.

A Frightening Development
Amidst all of that choice, one of the growing genres within video gaming is horror. Software developers have been able to produce more realistic gameplay, with some grisly results.

The enhancement of sound and graphics means that the element of realism is even better, and those with an interest in horror are naturally drawn to these titles. As most games do, those in the horror genre have the ability to take players right into the heart of the action.

Many of the best sellers within this category are survival games, where the player has to escape the attentions of crazed killers. Others are based on classic horror movies, where you can play as one of the characters.

It’s a theme that offers numerous different possibilities, but which are the best horror-themed games on the market today?

Alan Wake 2
Frequently named as one of the most thrilling horror titles of 2024, Alan Wake 2 has all the elements of a classic psychological masterpiece. In order to cover the survival elements effectively, a game has to build up tension before exploding into action and this does it perfectly.

Produced by Remedy Entertainment, this sequel is a major enhancement on the original release from 2010. It follows the story of novelist Alan Wake, who went missing on a trip to the Pacific Northwest and has spent thirteen years attempting to survive dark forces. Fans of the original release will love the new gameplay and Alan Wake 2 should also attract a legion of new followers.

Dead by Daylight
Dead by Daylight is a new release and it offers a twist on classic horror survival games. It’s a multiplayer option where one individual acts as the killer and up to four more can play out roles as those looking to escape the terror.

Like all good modern horror games, the sound and graphics involved with Dead by Daylight add to the tension and are as chilling as the gameplay. The survivors have to fix generators in order to escape and there is an element of trust between them.

It’s the perfect horror game to play with friends, and another big bonus with Dead by Daylight is that it’s also available on Steam for easier access.

If you’re looking for a retro game that pays homage to the golden age of slasher movies, Splatterhouse is highly recommended. The original version was released by the developers Namco way back in 1988, but it still has a fanbase over 35 years later.

Inspired by movies such as Friday the 13th and Evil Dead 2, Splatterhouse sees players take on the role of college major Rick, who has to battle a series of monsters to save his girlfriend Jennifer. In accordance with its age, Splatterhouse has naive graphics, but retro is in, and that’s one of the reasons why it’s been a big hit for so long.

Resident Evil
It’s unusual for a game to inspire a film series. Normally it works the other way round, but Resident Evil is such an iconic release that it’s made it to the movies. The game series first appeared in 1996, and it was produced by the developers at Capcom.

Resident Evil stands out in the horror genre as there are so many different elements to it. It has survival action as well as first and third person shooter, and this diverse gameplay is one of the reasons why it’s endured.

Silent Hill
Another horror-themed game with a long history, the first edition of Silent Hill came out in 1999. Since then there has been many sequels and remakes, so this is one of the most prolific franchises available.

Each version differs and it’s worth trying multiple titles with the series. The stories are complex, with stunning atmospherics, and Silent Hill will keep you engaged for some time.

It’s not to everyone’s taste, but horror is one of the rising stars of the video game industry. The evolution of software means that the graphics and sound are as chilling as anything portrayed in the movies, and those who love those themes are drawn to the games as a result.

This section of the industry is still reaching its peak, so it will be fascinating to welcome new titles and see where the horror genre takes us next.
