Twenty years ago, filmmaker Scott Glosserman introduced us to aspiring slasher killer Leslie Vernon.
Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon took a satirical look at the slasher film, tipping the tried-and-true conventions on their head.
The movie introduces us to Leslie, a young man with a great adoration for the slasher sub genre. It is his greatest wish to become the world’s next big serial killer, modelling himself on the slasher movie tropes. To boost his profile, Leslie invites a documentary crew to film his murder spree, and the results don’t show him in the most flattering light.
With a cast including Robert Englund, Zelda Rubenstein, and Kane Hodder, the satirical slasher quickly became a favourite among genre fans. In the two decades since, Behind the Mask: The Rise of Leslie Vernon has become a cult classic.
However, for the past two decades, fans have had one persistent question; where’s the sequel?
Now, after years in development hell, it has been confirmed that a Leslie Vernon sequel is happening!
A reliable source confirms that Scott Glosserman and co-writer David J. Stieve will return to their posts, with the project tentatively titled Behind the Mask II: The Return of Leslie Vernon.
Furthermore, cast members Nathan Baesel, Angela Goethals, and Robert Englund will reprise their roles.
Of the sequel, Glosserman said:
“For twenty years, people have asked if Leslie would ever come back. The truth is, he never really left. Fans kept this movie alive by sharing it, quoting it, introducing it to their friends, and treating it like something worth holding onto. This sequel is happening because of them.”
A Kickstarter campaign is expected to launch soon, in order to involve fans directly in the making of the sequel.
However, Glosserman asserts they’re “making the movie either way,” but seeks to launch the campaign to let fans have their say.
A production window and release date have yet to be announced. Similarly, the Kickstarter has yet to launch.
We’ll keep a close eye on this project and report any further developments on the sequel.
