2024 was not only another great year for cinema, but an outstanding year for the horror genre. With movies such as Longlegs and Terrifier 3 breaking records, and Smile 2 and Alien: Romulus topping the box-office, it was hoped the genre would get some award recognition.
Sadly, the powerhouse that is Longlegs is absent from the 2025 Golden Globe nominations. However, their recent announcement has provided some joy for the horror community, as there are two genre titles in the running!
First, we have the Alien: Romulus, which has been nominated for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement. What is this, I hear you ask? Well, this is a relatively new category, designed to recognise films in the past year that have dominated the box-office. Criteria for nomination dictates that a movie must have earned over $100 million worldwide. Last year’s winner was the inescapable powerhouse Barbie.
Up against the likes of Deadpool & Wolverine and Inside Out 2, Alien: Romulus faces some tough competition. However, we remain cautiously optimistic.
Next, the genre heavyweight, earning a fantastic 5 nominations, Coralie Fargeat’s The Substance. This body-horror nightmare has been sweeping the boards at award shows across the world, so we can’t say we’re surprised its up for five major awards.
Detailing an ageing Hollywood star’s quest for eternal youth, the Cronenberg inspired flick is being hailed as a major comeback for iconic actress Demi Moore.
It’s perfectly fitting then, that Moore has been nominated for Best Actress in a Motion Picture, many believing her the frontrunner.
Alongside this, The Substance has also garnered nods for Best Picture, Best Screenplay, Best Director, and Best Supporting Actor in a Motion Picture. Should The Substance win in any of its categories, the likelihood of Oscar success will grow substantially. Many genre fans have been championing Moore’s performance as Oscar material throughout the year, so could this come to pass?
Well done to The Substance and Alien: Romulus, and we’ll keep our fingers crossed for both films.
