Strap yourselves firmly into your seats and lock up any basement doors if you have them because Alberto Corredor’s terrifyingly poignant supernatural shocker Baghead, from the producers of IT and Barbarian, is all set to release in cinemas in UK and Ireland tomorrow, 25 January.
Directed by Corredor and adapted from the eponymous 2017 festival favourite short film, Baghead stars Freya Allen (Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes, “The Witcher”) as Iris, a young woman (Allen) who, following the death of her father, inherits a run-down pub and discovers a dark secret within its basement – Baghead – a shapeshifting creature that will let you speak to lost loved ones, but not without consequence.
The cast is rounded out with Ruby Barker (“Bridgerton”), Jeremy Irvine (War Horse), Peter Mullan (Session 9, “Ozark”), Saffron Burrows (“You“) and Julika Jenkins (“Dark”).
To mark the film’s release, we caught up with Corredor to learn what prompted him to expand on the original short, how fun but frustrating it was to create a new horror character with its own set of “instructions”, and how any similarities with recent sleeper hit Talk To Me are purely coincidental, as the Baghead short predates the Philippou brothers’ film by a good few years, and Corredor chose not to see Talk To Me until his film was out in cinemas, so as not to jinx it.
