Nearly 40 years since the first film in the Chucky franchise, Child’s Play, was released in 1988, the series continues to be one of the most recognisable and celebrated in the horror film genre, having raked in over $250 million across its history.
Responsible for some of the zaniest sequences, unique villain arcs, and unforgettable characters in modern film, the Chucky movies helped catapult Jennifer Tilly into the mainstream. A long-time actress, poker player, and just recently minted reality TV personality, Tilly is now a certified pop culture icon following her turn as Tiffany Valentine.
Despite her undeniable fame and fortune, though, Tilly remains highly appreciative of her Chucky roots. In fact, when news came out that the TV network SyFy would be canceling the TV adaption of the franchise, Tilly was one of the most vocal online. In her post, the 66-year-old thanked fans for their continued support, stating that it was their unwavering loyalty that has helped Chucky endure for as long as it has. This supportive streak is not new for Tilly and is just one more facet in her colourful professional and personal life.
A look at the woman behind Tiffany Valentine
Although most people know her as Chucky’s love interest, Tiffany Valentine, in 1998’s Bride of Chucky, Tilly has been able to carve out a name for herself beyond a single role and industry. Most interestingly, Tilly has been an elite poker player for a long time. She’s been active on the scene since the early 2000s and even won herself a bracelet at the World Series of Poker (WSOP) in 2005. The WSOP is the world’s longest-running poker tournament and is largely known as one of the most prestigious. Tilly’s involvement in high-level poker since the earlier part of the millennia says a lot about her experience and genuine interest in the card game, given that this was also the time that the poker boom was just starting.
This makes her peers with some of the industry’s most influential players. The most notable of her contemporaries is arguably Chris Moneymaker, who is widely credited with sparking the aforementioned boom after his historic and unexpected WSOP win in 2003. Today, he remains one of poker’s biggest names and is an ambassador for the country’s leading online poker site, ACR Poker. Together, they continue to push for further poker engagement through efforts like accessible poker events and tourneys, including the global Moneymaker Tour. As two industry leaders, Moneymaker and Tilly were even featured in the documentary All In: The Poker Movie back in 2009.

It seems that Tilly has not only found luck but also love around the poker table. About two decades ago, around the same time she won her bracelet, Tilly met her current partner, Phil Laak, while playing poker in 2004. Laak, who also starred in the above documentary, is a renowned poker pro with his own WSOP bracelet and World Poker Tour (WPT) title. To this day, the two remain happily together, following Tilly’s amicable breakup with her ex-husband, the late The Simpsons producer Sam Simon. Allegedly, her winnings from poker, along with the residuals from the long-running cartoon, have helped her build an estimated net worth of $40 million.
Tilly’s enduring love for Chucky on film and beyond
That said, it seems that her part in the Chucky franchise remains Tilly’s most special endeavour. So much so, that apart from regularly talking about the series, she has also invested her own time and money into it. In a December episode of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills, Tilly shared how she keeps her own Tiffany doll, particularly pampered, in one of her Bel-Air mansions. When a cast mate remarked that the dress the doll was wearing looked like a designer one they owned, Tilly added that Tiffany’s was a custom-made frock by Jean Paul Gaultier worth $4,500.
In another interview, Tilly went on to say that while she doesn’t like the idea of performers only being remembered for their one campy role, she’s perfectly fine with forever being tied to Chucky and Tiffany. Speaking to Interview magazine, the Academy Award-nominated actress says that her bold and fabulous personality actually aligns with the enigmatic Chucky universe, which is why it suits her anyway. She also said that she thinks she’ll be playing Tiffany until the day she dies. Having already starred in four films and the canceled TV series, Tilly’s performance as Tiffany is a fan favourite with a huge following of its own.
Although Tilly admits that she was initially wary of signing on for the film as it didn’t really line up with her aspirations of being a more serious movie star, she now sees the Chucky franchise as part of her own lifetime legacy. Considering how die-hard the franchise’s fans are, she even fully expects to receive Tiffany dolls on her grave once she passes.
For now, though, while there is currently no new update on when Tilly will next be portraying Tiffany, her enthusiasm for the character bodes well for future participation. In light of statements from the TV show’s producers hinting that there may soon be another continuation of the franchise, it’s highly likely that Tilly will be breathing life back into Tiffany sooner rather than later.
