We reported in January that filmmaker Robert Eggers would re-team with Focus Features for Werwulf, both hoping to repeat the success of 2024’s Nosferatu.
However, since then, things have been completely silent. Outside of the initial announcement, we have learned no further information regarding the project.
Until now…
Word reaches us that Eggers is continuing to re-team with those involved with Nosferatu, with the announcement of Werwulf’s first cast members.
Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Lily-Rose Depp are reportedly set to star in the upcoming feature, with Johnson said to be playing the titular creature. Both had pivotal roles in Nosferatu, and both received favourable notices, so it looks like Eggers hopes Werwulf will see similar results.
Werwulf comes from a script penned by Eggers and Sjón, before the enormous success of Nosferatu. The project is described as a Gothic werewolf tale set in 13th Century England.
Although details remain sparse, we’re told that Eggers had initially planned to shoot Werwulf in black and white. However, following the tremendous success of Nosferatu, the studio has requested a similarly bleak feel to the upcoming project.
We are also told that the dialogue will feature the “old-English” dialect, with subtitles present to help the audience along.
Nosferatu producer Chris Columbus is aboard to produce Werwulf, with filming expected to begin soon.
So, can Eggers make lightning strike again with another Gothic monster tale? We’ll have to wait and see.
Werwulf is currently slated to release on December 25th 2026. Watch this space for further updates.
Update: Word also reaches us that fellow Nosferatu alum Willem Dafoe has entered negotiations to join the cast of Werwulf.
