47 Meters Down was a surprise hit at the box office when it secured an impressive $44.1 million at the box office, on a modest $5 million budget. As perhaps not expected, the film has now landed a sequel titled 48 Meters Down; suggesting the film will go the extra meter. A mile would be a little too ambitious, wouldn’t it?
Johannes Roberts will be returning to direct and write the new story, which will be moving to a new setting: Brazil. The synopsis for 48 Meters Down is as follows:
Synopsis:
This time the action will move the deadly shark action from Mexico to Brazil and follow a group of girls looking for adventure in the coastal metropolis of Recife. Hoping to get off the well-worn tourist trail, they hear about some hidden underwater ruins only to find that the turquoise waves of their secret Atlantis aren’t completely uninhabited.
We’re glad that the sequel plans to offer something new, rather than re-hashing the same story from the first. We look forward to the ocean and its ferocious inhabitants taking a couple of new victims, but still maintaining the intensity and sheer claustrophobic dread of 47 Meters Down.
