Yorgos Lanthimos (The Killing of a Sacred Deer, The Favourite) has lined up his next project, an adaptation of Scottish author Alasdair Gray’s 1992 novel Poor Things—and Mark Ruffalo (Zodiac, Spotlight) and Emma Stone (Zombieland, Cruella) are set to star!
I’ll admit it’s been a while since I read Poor Things, but what I do remember is that the novel is an ambiguous and fascinating Frankenstein-esque story full of conflicting narratives. Presenting himself as the editor of real historical documents discovered by his friends, Gray weaves a complex tale of love, discovery, and scientific daring, centring around the incredible story of Belle Baxter, a young Victorian woman brought back to life by an eccentric but brilliant scientist—or was she?!
Tony McNamara (The Favourite) is writing the script. Let’s hope he keeps the criticism of Glasgow City Council in.
