Just a little while ago, we brought you the tantalising update that Sony had the I Know What You Did Last Summer legacy sequel on the fast-track. The studio was so impressed by the pitch that they’ve decided to make it a high priority project. Furthermore, we reported, via a trusted source, that original star Jennifer Love Hewitt had a “key” role in the script, and that the film couldn’t work without her.

Now, the project’s writer, Leah McKendrick, has shone more light on what her take on the material is about, and just how much the original means to her.

Speaking recently, McKendrick had the following to say about being offered the project, and how it made her feel:
“More than anything I thought, ‘Because my love is so deep for I Know What You Did Last Summer, I have to protect it. I must protect it. I can’t let this be, like, cheesy and a cash grab.’ No spoilers, but I will say that I think if you’re an OG fan like me and you, I think you’re gonna be happy. I think you’re gonna get it.”

Elaborating on what she’s done with the 1997 legacy characters, McKendrick stressed that Jennifer Love Hewitt’s Julie James is a vital cog in her planned sequel:
“I mean, it’s hot people doing questionable things, right? At its core, I think it really reckons with some big ideas about hero and villain, right and wrong, how your skeletons come back to haunt you. And in the age of the internet, and the age where fame is such a revered concept, the creation of TikTok and social media, who is Julie James in a world where there are no secrets anymore?”

So, does that mean social media will feature heavily in this new movie? And what exactly will thrust Julie James back into the centre of a nightmare 26 years later? We’re very curious to find out.

There is currently no release date for the Last Summer legacy sequel, although it is expected some time in 2025. Although no casting announcements have been made, Jennifer Love Hewitt has already confirmed she’d “100%” return if asked. Freddie Prinze Jnr has also been eyed to board the project.

Things look to be moving very quickly with this one, so we’ll be watching closely for any further updates.
