Shawn Levy recently spoke to Glamour to discuss the third season of Stranger Things. One of the most important things he said was that Will will get a break. He won’t be hopelessly tormented like he was in Stranger Things 2 and, instead, “He’ll be dealing with stuff, but he won’t be at rock bottom the way we forced the amazing Noah Schnapp to play. We’re [going to be] dealing with forces of evil that are new.”
That’s both good news for the actor and the audience alike, as targeting Will again will risk the storyline becoming too familiar. A breath of refreshing air needs to be blown into Stranger Things 3 if it is to remain as the creative and exciting show that it is currently.
Levy additionally spoke about the length of the next series and teased plans for all the characters:
If we could make it [return] faster, then we would, but we’re going to make it well. We’re going to do it right. It’ll be an eight- or nine-episode season. The number of episodes will be dictated by the amount of story that excites us. We now know what is going to happen in season three to every character.
That’s all we know for now, but keep your eyes peeled for more as it comes. The new season is said to start filming this spring, with a release date slated for late 2018 or early 2019.
