He’s no stranger when it comes to adapting the work of Michael Crichton, having adapted Jurassic Park to enormous success.
So, it’s little surprise that that David Koepp is penning a reboot of Crichton’s 1973 hit Westworld.
The 1973 horror-sci-fi film was only the second film Crichton directed, and his second original screenplay.
The movie details a futuristic Wild West amusement park descending into chaos, when the gunslinging androids begin to malfunction.
Originally starring Yul Brynner and James Brolin, Westworld became one of the biggest hits of 1973, and helped propel Crichton’s profile in Hollywood.
Besides Crichton’s original film, Westworld also spawned a sequel entitled Futureworld in 1976, and a short-lived television series in 1982. Crichton was not involved with either project.
Most recently, Westworld was adapted into a dystopian drama by J.J. Abrams for HBO. The show would run for four seasons, debuting in 2016 before being cancelled in 2020 due to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Talks of a Westworld feature reboot or remake have been swirling for years, but Koepp’s involvement is the first time a writer has been in the mix.
According to a reliable source, a “major filmmaker” is circling the project, awaiting a draft of Koepp’s script.
Currently, the reboot is in development at Warner Bros.
We’ll keep you informed should any further Westworld updates come our way.
