Composer Michael Giacchino made the jump to directing last year with the Disney+ horror film Werewolf by Night, and he’s already lined up his next project. Deadline reports that he’ll helm a remake of the 1954 creature feature Them! for Warner Bros.
In the original Them!, which was directed by Gordan Douglas, a nest of giant, ferocious mutant ants—the result of nuclear testing—are discovered in the New Mexico desert and threaten to destroy civilization.
“There’s always a movie in your mind that never leaves your head,” Giacchino told Deadline. “For me, that’s Them! It wasn’t until much later in life until I learned what it was about—the nuclear age.”
Teasing the plot of the remake, the director added: “What I love about Them! is exactly what it’s called: Them! It’s about the other, the unknown which one refuses or can’t understand. The current version of Them! is about immigration, and to tell a story about the subject through a lens of this insane science fiction monster movie.”
Giacchino is currently meeting with writers and hopes to get production up and running soon.
