Dracula is alive and well… But for how much longer?
This past week Universal dropped an action-packed trailer for their hotly anticipated Dracula updating, Renfield.
Promising plenty of blood and supernatural fisticuffs, the clip gives us a much closer look at Nicolas Cage’s performance as the legendary vampire. Previous promo material had kept Cage to a minimum as their big star, but here he is out in full force and clearly loving the project.
Centred around Nicholas Hoult’s titular Renfield, the trailer promises a bloody and hilarious time as Dracula’s weary assistant longs to break free from his hold and slay the master of darkness once and for all.
Renfield features plenty of witty dialogue, with a healthy dose of self-aware humour and lashings of outlandish gore from this clip. Underscored by Radiohead’s Creep, it’s clear that the filmmakers wish to put a new and different spin on a seminal horror tale that’s been told countless times.
With the star-power of both Hoult and Cage, hopes are high that Renfield will be Cage’s return to mainstream Hollywood after many years on the indie circuit.
From this trailer it is clear to see Cage is giving his all and delighting in the comically sinister turn. Front and centre as blood spills and bodies fly, Cage certainly looks the part and has his Dracula accent down to a tee.
Will Renfield sink its teeth into the box-office and suck all competition dry? Will this be the resurgence of Nicolas Cage? Only time will tell… Renfield opens worldwide on April 14, with tickets on-sale from April 4th.
