Since it’s 2007 release, the Halloween-based horror anthology movie Trick ‘r Treat has become a huge favourite amongst genre fans.
Constantly finding itself on yearly Halloween watch lists, the movie’s adorably deadly mascot Sam has also become quite the horror icon.
The film takes place on Halloween night in the fictional town of Warren Valley, Ohio. The plot follows a nonlinear narrative, with characters crossing paths throughout the film. At the centre of the story is Sam, a peculiar trick-or-treater in an orange footie pyjama costume, who appears to enforce the “rules” of Halloween.
Of course, given the movie’s rapid cult status, demand for a sequel soon grew. First mentioned in 2009, and “officially” greenlit in 2013, Trick ‘r Treat 2 has hit various stumbling blocks over the past 11 years. However, writer-director Michael Dougherty has remained steadfast the sequel will happen.
Recently, during the filmmaker’s commentary for Arrow Video’s 4K release of Trick ‘r Treat, Dougherty offered possibly the most promising update yet on a sequel:
“I want to do it. It’s not dead by any stretch. We have some momentum moving in the right direction for sure, but I’m also of the belief that I’m not going to compromise or make sacrifice just to make a sequel. It has the be under the right conditions with the right resources. Otherwise, I will be content with just letting this be this weird little movie that fought its way through a lot of adversity. But I’m very, very happy with the script for the sequel.”
So, the filmmaker is on board, a script has been written, however, Dougherty clarified that the biggest obstacle in the way is the fact Trick ‘r Treat was an independent feature. According to the director, this has resulted in various studios being hesitant to back a sequel over the years, despite the original’s cult status.
However, the most hopeful thing to take away here, is that Dougherty will “never give up” on his quest to deliver this long-awaited follow-up to fans.
