The Conjuring
The Conjuring, released in July 2013, and directed by James Wan, is a franchise that shares the story of Carol and Roger. The couple moves into an island farm with their family only to find strange things happening to them. The spirit of a little girl named Annabelle, who died in the house, possesses a doll that torments the family. The haunt and scare become more pronounced each day as they fail to get rid of the doll.

To find a solution, Carolyn hires paranormal investigators Lorraine and Ed to review the situation. The Conjuring is based on the factual findings from the case files of the investigators, who soon affirm the presence of an evil power tormenting the family. Lorraine reveals to the family that leaving the house will not prevent the hunt. Instead, they must work together to save the family.

This movie will not just leave you scared; it will also make you want to crawl under your bed sheets. It is little wonder why these kinds of horror movies are integrated into different aspects of online entertainment like gaming and fashion. The Boogeyman
Adapted from Stephen King’s short story, “The Boogeyman,” this American supernatural horror movie was released in 2023. It tells the story of a family dealing with the death of a loved one. Sadie Harper and her sister Sawyer are still in shock following the death of their mom. Their father, Will Harper, a psychiatrist, feels no better than his teenage daughters. The horror action begins when a troubled man, Lester Billings, walks in for a session at Harper’s office. His story is scary. He explains how a strange evil entity killed all his three kids in his home. In total disbelief, Harper goes downstairs to call the police. Meanwhile, his daughter Sadie has just returned from school following an incident.

Saddie hears a strange noise and traces it, only to find Lester hanging dead inside a closet. But it doesn’t end there. The Boogeyman begins to torment Harper’s family. During a house party with the girls and their friends, Sadie encounters the Boogeyman while Sawyer is attacked. Sadie teams up with Rita to trap the boogeyman, but the plan fails, and Rita is killed. Sadie escapes, but her family is in danger. She returns only to find her father, Will, in danger. The sisters must summon the will to save their father or watch him die. Ultimately, they did and set the Boogeyman on fire.

Hereditary
Hereditary is a horror masterpiece released in 2018. The movie, written and directed by Ari Aster, features Alex Wolff, Toni Collette, and Gabriel Byrne, among others. The plot revolves around a family of four; Steve, his wife Annie, and their kids Peter (16) and Charlie (13). The storyline is very immersive, making you feel trapped as though you were a part of Steve’s family.

It begins after Annie’s mother’s death. Her past life mysteries begin to torment the family as they venture into a web of conspiracy. It starts one day when Annie insists that Charlie follow Peter to a party. At the event, he abandons his sister while hanging out with friends. Charlie strays and ends up eating a cake containing walnuts. She suffers from a severe nut allergy, and as Peter drives her to the hospital, there is an accident, and a pole decapitates her.

Peter is filled with guilt and feels responsible for his sister’s horrific death. Annie cannot hold back her resentment towards Peter who was supposed to look after her sister. The family suffers a big fracture but Steve tries to make peace between them. Ultimately, Annie joins a support group to overcome her grief. She learns how to communicate with the dead and begins to interact with Charlie. Things get out of hand as Annie is possessed by Charlie’s spirit, and she becomes vengeful. Will the family survive the series of scary events about to unfold?
