It’s been quite a while since we’ve had an update on the unexpected, but very welcome, sequel They Follow.
The movie is a follow-up to David Robert Mitchell’s 2014 film It Follows, and details a young woman’s plight as she is stalked by a shape-shifting entity passed on through a sexual encounter.
NEON, the hot horror studio of the moment, are set to produce the sequel. Mitchell will return to write and direct, as will original star Maika Monroe, and up until now, that was all we knew. However, Monroe has recently shared her thoughts on the project, letting fans know what to expect from the sequel.
In a brand-new interview promoting the upcoming Longlegs, Monroe had the following to say about Mitchell and the prospect of a sequel:
“David is brilliant. The original was changing the game in the genre, and he wouldn’t ever make a sequel if he didn’t think it was going to top it. He just knows what he wants to do and what he wants to make. I mean, at first, I’m like, ‘Oh, a sequel? Where are we going to go here?’ And I read it, and it’s just so fucking good. It’s so good.”
Of her character, Jay Height, and where she is following the trauma of the original, Monroe revealed:
“I’m so excited. I think where you’ll meet Jay at this point is maybe not what’s expected, but it’s so cool. It’s just, of course, as everyone says for sequels, literally, though, is just bigger and darker and more fucked up. Reading it was the craziest thing ever.”
Filming is expected to commence some time later this year for They Follow, but the project has yet to be given a release date. Similarly, no casting announcements have been made at this time, but we’ll keep our eyes peeled for new info.
