It’s been more than a little while since we had an update on the status of Lionsgate’s upcoming reboot of The Strangers. It’s been so long in fact, that many had begun to wonder if the already-completed film had been shelved, or would perhaps release directly to streaming.
However, after many months of radio silence, a source now tells us that Lionsgate will release the film theatrically in 2024. No definitive release date has been settled on as of this writing, but the project is on the 2024 slate, and is eyeing either a summer or fall window.
Although the third entry in the Strangers franchise, this chapter will act as a reboot/remake, following the under-performance of the long-in-gestation Strangers: Prey at Night.
Although details are still scarce, what we do know is that this reimagining has been directed by Renny Harlin and stars Madelaine Petsch and Froy Guitierrez. Photography took place in the autumn of 2022 in Slovakia and the film will tell the tale of a couple enduring a night of terror whilst staying at an Oregon Air BnB.
Tentatively titled The Strangers: Part One, this newest chapter is touted as the first in a trilogy of films, with Harlin hoping to direct them all after seeing the scripts on offer.
“It is only fitting that I get to return to my favourite genre with the incredibly well-written trilogy of ‘The Strangers.’ The characters and the storyline are all grounded in reality and offer me an endless tapestry of haunting visuals in bringing these movies alive.”
We will watch this project closely as the new year draws in and report any further updates. 2024 is shaping up to be quite the year for horror already.
