Valak has officially returned and kicked off the fall horror season in style by topping the worldwide box-office!
Friday September 8th saw The Conjuring Universe release the eagerly awaited sequel The Nun II following a very protracted post-production period.
Once again, The Conjuring brand has come through for Warner Bros. as The Nun II immediately topped the domestic box-office with $32.6 million in total. Although this is considerably lower than The Nun’s $53.8 million debut, we must keep in mind that sequels can see a drop of up to 50% when it comes to profits.
Elsewhere, Valak scared up $52.7 million, for a worldwide opening weekend total of $85.3 million. With a production budget of $38.5 million, this means it won’t be long until The Nun II turns a healthy profit.
Although critical reception to the sequel is predictably mixed, audiences have praised The Nun II as an improvement on the 2017 original. This time around Valak delivered the scares, whilst the production team took full advantage of the gothic setting, something many felt was overlooked in the original.
We will continue to monitor the numbers and are sure it won’t be long until The Nun II crosses that coveted $100 million mark. However, does it stand a chance of outgrossing the original’s monstrous $300 million haul? Only time will tell!
