Way back in 2017, Entertainment Weekly teased that the Crooked Man — a terrifying supernatural entity from The Conjuring 2 — was getting his own spinoff. At the time, Annabelle: Creation was about to release and The Nun has just wrapped production, so it seemed entirely likely that another character from The Conjuring universe would get his own film.
Alas, it wasn’t meant to be. The Crooked Man movie is no longer in the works according to James Wan.
Wan broke the news over on Instagram while sharing some fun behind-the-scenes pictures of actor Javier Botet as the character. “Unfortunately the spin-off movie with this character isn’t happening,” the director wrote. “Outside of my control. But maybe one day.”
With Annabelle getting three solo films (so far) and The Nun getting a sequel next year, it’s clear there’s an appetite for more stories in The Conjuring universe, so perhaps we’ll see the Crooked Man again in the future. In the meantime, we recently learned that a fourth film in the core franchise is in development, so we’ll likely be meeting some new nightmares very soon.
