We have known since October that a fourth Conjuring chapter was in active development at Warner Bros., however, now we have an official title!

Revealed during the Warner showcase at Las Vegas’ Cinema-Con this past week, the fourth chapter of the Warren’s ghost hunting saga will be entitled The Conjuring: Last Rites.

Little is known about the project currently as it is still in the early stages of development. What we do know is that the script will be penned by David Leslie Johnson-McGoldrick, who has written every outing in the main series since 2016’s The Conjuring 2. We also have the confirmed return of Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga for their fifth appearance as husband-and-wife ghosthunters Ed and Lorraine Warren.

Wilson and Farmiga have played the real life ghosthunters from the series’ 2013 inception, including an appearance in 2019’s Annabelle Comes Home. However, it is not clear what threat the two will face down this time as we have no solid story details as of this writing.

Given that the Warrens are now firmly in the 1980s, that does limit the number of cases Last Rites could be based on considerably. The film may be about the infamous 1985 case of Bill Ramsay, a man convinced he was possessed by a werewolf spirit. It may also tell of the Smurl family, who claimed to be followed by the evil invading their Pennsylvania home wherever they went.

Both sound ideal for the big-screen and offer plenty of potential for spooky phantoms, however, the film may surprise us and choose a less well-known case from the Warren’s lexicon.

The Conjuring: Last Rites does not currently have a release date or a director attached, but creator James Wan is set to return as producer along with Peter Safran. We’ll keep our eyes peeled for more information.
