“If it’s in a word, or if it’s in a look… You can’t get rid of The Babadook.”
We can’t say we weren’t warned, can we?
Somehow, it’s been 10 years since Jennifer Kent took the horror genre by storm with The Babadook.
The Australian-made flick starred Essie Davis and Noah Wiseman, and detailed a single mother’s struggles with life following the death of her husband. Barely making ends meet and with a problematic child, Amelia Vanek’s issues are amplified by the arrival of a mysterious book, telling the grim tale of an entity named The Babadook. Upon reading the tale, she soon finds herself haunted by the top-hat wearing figure.
Earning critical and commercial success, The Babadook was lauded as an atypical horror. Instead of relying on the standard jump-scare fodder, the film wove a complex tale of grief, stress, and mental fragility.
Enduring for a decade is no small feat, and that is why IFC have decided to celebrate the milestone by releasing The Babadook back into theatres.
Tickets are available from August 14th, for a nationwide engagement beginning on September 19th.
Writer/director Jennifer Kent will be touring alongside the re-release, appearing at select theatres for an audience Q&A. So, check your local listings to see if the festivities extend to your area.
This time, when The Babadook knocks… let him in. He’ll behave, we promise!
