Two years ago, I dressed up as the Babadook for the New York City Pride March—and I wasn’t the only one. The monster became an unexpected gay icon after coming out of the closet in spectacular fashion in Jennifer Kent’s 2014 hit The Babadook.
Okay, not exactly. A Netflix glitch supposedly once listed the movie under the LGBT subgenre, leading fans to jokingly speculate about the film’s undertones. But many of us queer horror folk have embraced The Babadook wholeheartedly as one of our own—and to celebrate Pride Month, Scream Factory is releasing a special variant of the film’s Blu-ray, celebrating the creature’s queer identity.
The limited edition release features a rainbow flag-inspired slipcover with a gloss finish and embossed highlights. Only 2,500 are being made, sold exclusively through Shout Factory’s website. Shout Factory is also donating a portion of all sales made through its website in June to the Los Angeles LGBT Center.
Are you planning to get “Babashook” for Pride?
