“It’s an unspoken rule not to use someone else’s cards…”
Just a few weeks ago, we reported on the closure of a deal which will see Gary Dauberman partner with Sony. The aim is to oversee their Screen Gems label as it transforms into a horror specialty studio.
With very little time passing since that announcement, we have a trailer for what is undoubtedly the first new movie in a large stream of genre projects.
Tarot sees Moonfall director Spenser Cohen take on a smaller scale project from a script he co-wrote. With Spiderman star Jacob Batalon in the lead, Tarot looks like the perfect kind of supernatural hijinks to kick off a horror-rich summer season.
Following a group of friends that infiltrate an old house, things take a decidedly sinister turn once one begins to tell fortunes from a peculiar tarot deck. One by one the teens are hunted down by the entities depicted on the cards, meeting their ends in various gruesome ways.
What’s most interesting about this upcoming tale is its Thirteen Ghosts style creation of lore. In the trailer we see various sinister entities come to life when depicted on the cards. Amongst them are The Devil, The Countess, and The Hanging Man. It’s clear Tarot wants to set itself apart from films of a similar ilk with the threat of multiple antagonists. We’re excited to see how the film goes over with audiences.
Tarot will release on May 10 2024, and will hopefully spell a solid beginning to Screen Gems ambitious horror-heavy plans. You can view the trailer below:
