Much-hyped South African psychological thriller Number 37 will be hitting US cinemas in the autumn, having been picked up for release by Dark Star Pictures. The Hitchcockian crime flick, which made a splash at this year’s SXSW, will be rolled out nationwide after opening first in New York and LA, before an early winter VOD release.
The film stars Irshaad Ally, Monique Rockman, Ephraim Gordon, David Manuel and Sandy Schultz. Read on for the official writeup.
“The plot of the Afrikaans-language pic is an homage to Hitchcock’s Rear Window and centers on Randall, a low-level criminal recently crippled in an illicit deal gone wrong. Cooped up in his apartment in a rough Cape Town neighborhood, he is heavily indebted to a loan shark named Emmie with the clock ticking for him and his girlfriend Pam to pay the money back. A gift of a pair of binoculars presents him with an opportunity to get his hands on the cash, but at great risk.”
Shot in Cape Town, Number 37 is the feature debut of director Nosipho Dumisa, who adapted from his own 2015 short film.
