After a five-year hiatus, it seems the Insidious franchise is screaming back to life in a big way. Not only to we have the July 7th release of the series’ fifth instalment The Red Door coming, but now word reaches us that Blumhouse and Screen Gems are pursuing a spin-off; Thread: An Insidious Tale.
Furthermore, the announcement of a franchise expansion was accompanied by the news that the film is on the fast-track with a solid script and director also in place. Exorcist and Moon Knight showrunner Jeremy Slater will take the reins from a self-penned script in his directorial debut.
47 Metres Down star Mandy Moore will headline the spin-off alongside Silicone Valley actor Kumail Nanjiani, with the plot described as follows:
“The story here is that of a husband and wife (Nanjiani and Moore) who enlist the help of a spell to travel back in time, such that they can prevent the death of their young daughter. The consequences, of course, prove to be severe.”
Further casting announcements have not yet been revealed, meaning it is unclear if series face Lin Shaye will be involved in this latest offering.
With Insidious: The Red Door billed as the “final” entry in the Lambert Family saga that has carried the series thus far, it is only natural that the filmmakers seek to expand beyond those boundaries. After all, “The Further” is a big realm, and others must have ventured there, right?
We will keep you posted on any further updates about the series’ intriguing new direction.
