Taika Waititi and Jermaine Clement have for some time now been promising spinoffs to their hilarious vampire comedy What We do in The Shadows. While the werewolf-centred We’re Wolves does not yet have a script however, the pair have begun to develop a series focusing on the film’s clueless police officers.
Plans for the series were announced last year, along with the title Paranormal Event Response Unit. The series is reportedly now moving ahead with a name change, and will be titled Wellington Paranormal. The show will follow What We do in The Shadows’s bumbling officers of the law, Mike Minogue and Karen O’Leary, together with Cori Gonzalez-Macuer’s Nick, as they struggle to protect Wellington from supernatural threats.
Wellington Paranormal will comprise six 30-minute episodes, and is set to premiere on New Zealand channel TVNZ 2 in 2018.
In a recent interview with New Zealand’s Stuff, Clement explained Wellington’s very real connection to the paranormal, saying, “It’s surprising how many demonic possessions there are. There was a very tense situation at the Bucket Fountain – I can tell you it involved a possible Gateway from Hell. We’re very concerned about this kind of stuff. We had an incident with some zombies which got pretty tense there. So luckily they’re taken care of. A couple of crew members were turned into zombies – I think. It’s hard to tell sometimes.”
