It was a remake before they were “cool,” and now David Cronenberg’s seminal body horror classic The Fly looks to be getting a modern-day companion piece from Nikyatu Jusu.
A remake of the 1959 classic, Cronenberg’s film saw Jeff Goldblum undergo an horrific transformation as his DNA was fused with that of a housefly. Able to accomplish so much more than its 1959 counterpart, Cronenberg took full advantage of the effects at his disposal, crafting some incredible transformation scenes that are still lauded today.
Now, 20th Century Studios are set to revive Cronenberg’s masterpiece with a project said to be “set in the same universe” as the 1986 classic.
Nanny filmmaker Nikyatu Jusu is said to currently be penning the script, as well as being busy with a remake of George A. Romero’s Night of the Living Dead. Should he be able to find a spare moment, we’re told Jusu will also undertake directing duties.
Plot details on this new instalment into The Fly mythology are being kept closely guarded, however, the studio was keen to stress that this is “not a remake.” According to a reliable source, this new movie will act as a legacy sequel, paying loving tribute to Cronenberg and the 1986 film.
Of course, Cronenberg’s film did spawn a sequel in 1991. However, The Fly II starring Eric Stoltz and Daphne Zuniga was widely panned by critics, and considered a box-office disappointment.
Will this new offering fare any better? We’re intrigued to find out.
Currently, the project does not have an official title, or a release date in place. However, we’ll watch the project closely for any further developments.
