Just like her Scream co-star Jenna Ortega, it seems franchise lead Melissa Barrera is set on carving a path as a scream queen. News broke just prior to Scream VI’s opening weekend last week that Barrera will next take the lead in the horror-romance-comedy Your Monster.
Written and directed by first-time feature maker Caroline Lindy, the story is described as “female-driven” and “powerful.
Your Monster will see Barrera star as aspiring actress Laura Franco, whose life is thrown into turmoil following a traumatic break-up and a cancer diagnosis. However, the young woman finds new confidence and an all-new will to live after she makes friends with the monster living in her closet.
Joining Melissa Barrera are actors Tommy Dewey, Edmund Donovan, and Kayla Foster, all up and coming actors and ones to look out for in the future.
According to reports, filming has already wrapped but no release date has been set. It is likely Your Monster will release during the latter part of 2023, but nothing is set in stone just yet.
This will be Barrera’s first solo lead in a horror film, so it will be interesting to see how the actress balances carrying a film without the safety net of her Scream castmates.
With her star on the rise after a lauded performance in Scream VI, Melissa Barrera is definitely going to be on our screens a lot more in the coming years.
