Beloved actress and horror icon Hayden Panettiere has died.
Born August 21 1989, Panettiere and her family hail from Palisades, New York. Beginning her career at just eight months-old, Panettiere worked as a baby model, before transitioning to commercials in 1990.
At the age of four, Panettiere bagged her first regular acting job, appearing as Sarah Roberts on the soap opera One Life to Live. The youngster would stay with this role until 1997, when she’d leave to appear as Lizzie Spaulding on Guiding Light.
During her time on soap operas, Panettiere transitioned to feature films, providing the voice of Princess Dot in the hit Pixar animation Antz.
At the age of ten, Panettiere won huge critical praise for Remember the Titans, where she appeared opposite Denzel Washington.
As Panettiere grew, so did her profile, with prolific roles in the likes of Ally McBeal, as well as the features Ice Princess, and Bring it On: All or Nothing.
2006 saw Panettiere bag the role which propelled her to international stardom. Her role as indestructible cheerleader Claire Bennet on the sci-fi-drama Heroes remains a role closely associated with Panettiere. She would remain with the show for four seasons, before departing in 2010.
Panettiere would parlay her television success into further feature roles, including leading parts in 2009’s I Love You, Beth Cooper, and 2011’s slasher sequel Scream 4. Her portrayal of Kirby Reed in the latter became instantly beloved by fans and critics, with Panettiere hailed as the franchise’s newest “icon.” Kirby remained so beloved over the years that Panettiere would reprise the role in 2023’s Scream VI, following years of fan demand.
In 2012, Panettiere landed the role of Juliette Barnes on the country music drama series Nashville. The actress would stay with the role for six years, garnering two Golden Globe nominations and numerous hits on the Billboard Country Music chart.
Following the conclusion of Nashville in 2018, Panettiere retreated from the spotlight. She had long struggled with addiction, and battled a severe case of postpartum depression following the birth of her daughter.
Although she made a triumphant return to the screen with 2023’s Scream VI, the actress was dogged by further allegations of substance use, as well as numerous personal setbacks. At the time of her passing, Panettiere had released her acclaimed autobiography This is Me: A Reckoning just three months prior.
Hayden Panettiere died on August 16th 2026. The actress was found unresponsive, with no official cause of death issued as of this writing. She is survived by her parents Shelby and Alan, and her daughter Kaya. She was just 36 years old.
