Scott Free Productions Eyes a Remake of The Wailing

Posted on: January 21st, 2017

The Wailing was one of the best horror films of last year. Even if it didn’t manage to make our Top 10 Horror Films of 2016, it is still an extraordinary, chilling and remarkable feature that proves Korea is a horror force to be reckoned with. You can read our 5-star review right here.

Ridley Scott’s Scott Free Productions has its eyes on a Western remake, mainly due to the film’s comparisons to The Exorcist, Seven and The Ring. The head of Fox International Production Korea said: “The locality and sensibility of The Wailing is so strong that I don’t think it would be easy to do a Western remake, and it will be important who directs it. So I told him I think the only director who could do the remake is Na Hong Jin. But we are still in early stages of talks.”

So, nothing is set in stone just yet, but they are considering getting the original director back to remake the film. A heap of directors have remade their own films, including Michael Haneke, Michael Mann, Ole Bornedal and Alfred Hitchcock, but have any of their remakes been better? The US Grudge was certainly less impressive than its Japanese predecessor.

The Wailing is a complex and exciting supernatural thriller and it would be interesting to see how the West would tackle a remake. Colour us intrigued.
