A trailer has just landed for Mike Flanagan’s Ouija: Origin of Evil, the sequel to 2014’s Ouija which, while undeniably a wretched, fetid mess of a film, did make a whole lot of cash for Universal. Rather than just churning out another stinker though, the studio were smart enough to get a respected talent in modern horror filmmaking onboard, and it looks as though the Oculus/Hush director is very much doing his own thing with the sequel.
Set in LA in 1965, Origin of Evil follows a charlatan medium who finds a new tool of deception when she brings a Ouija board home, planning to use it in her phoney séances. The board however, brings through a genuine evil entity that possesses her youngest daughter Doris, and the family must battle to save her, and sent the malevolent spirit back to the other side.
Quite simply, this is one of the best trailers for a big studio horror flick I’ve seen in some time. It conveys a wildly different tone to the first film, and is crammed with jaw-dropping imagery. It even made me laugh a few times. Y’know what? Just watch it; it rules.
Ouija: Origin of Evil stars Twilight’s Elizabeth Reaser, Sam Anderson (Devil’s Due, Lost), Kate Siegel (Oculus, Hush), Doug Jones (Pan’s Labyrinth, Hellboy) and Lulu Wilson (Deliver Us from Evil) as young Doris.
There’ll be high hopes for this one when it opens on 21st October.
