Whilst news of an X-Files reboot seems unstoppable at the moment, for many years that wasn’t the case.
Prior to the most recent 2016 revival, the last time fans had gotten an X-Files fix was the 2008 theatrical release The X-Files: I Want to Believe.
A movie that was a decade in production, I Want to Believe was the first outing for Mulder and Scully since the series’ conclusion seven years earlier.
Although only mildly well received upon release, I Want to Believe has since developed a cult following.
Now, almost twenty years after I Want to Believe premiered, it looks as though a new version is set to debut on Disney+.
A new Disney promo lists I Want to Believe as coming to the streaming service on June 11th 2026, listed as “The X-Files: I Want to Believe – Director’s Cut – Bonus Feature.”
This fits with info creator Chris Carter recently dropped, confirming he was working on bringing the long-rumoured director’s cut to the public:
“I just got the go ahead to do a Director’s Cut of I Want to Believe. I can’t tell you how excited I am about this. I made it too scary, basically, and I was told so by the brass at Fox, and they wanted a PG-13 movie. So, we cut it back to be a PG-13 movie.”
Carter further promises that his favoured version of I Want to Believe is the scary X-Files movie he’d always wanted to make:
“Now I have a chance to go back and make the scary movie that I always intended to make. It’s not just doing a Director’s Cut to do a Director’s Cut. It’s really kind of bringing to life something that for me was on the page and never got to the screen.“
So, once again we have another long whispered of “lost cut” of a movie coming to light years later.
Currently, it is believed that the director’s cut of I Want to Believe will premiere on June 11th via Disney+.
