We barely had time to get our first Saw story written before we were given our first real development!

However, this is a development that has somewhat dulled fans excitement at the announcement of an eleventh film.

Unfortunately, Saw X screenwriters Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger won’t be returning to write the next chapter. Stolberg confirmed this via his official X profile, as he issued the following message:

“Got a slew of DM‘s today about the Lionsgate Saw announcement. Pete and I are sitting this chapter out. Very excited to see this one as a fan of the franchise. I think people will be pleased with the team.”

Given that Saw X was greatly lauded for its strong script and character development, fans greeted Stolberg’s announcement with great upset. In a follow-up message, Stolberg thanked fans for their loyalty, but poked fun at the severity of their outpouring.

“THANK YOU to everyone writing kind words about Saw X and your disappointment that I won’t be writing Saw XI. To make you feel better, just remember what y’all said when Jigsaw came out! HAHAHAHA. Honestly, I’m SO excited to sit back and watch this new one as a fan!”

It is currently unknown who is in place to take over from Stolberg and Goldfinger, but the fan response assures that they’ll be a tough act to follow.

It is quite probable that Stolberg has opted to step away from the Saw series after three entries due to working on a sequel to 2009’s slasher remake Sorority Row. The writer has dropped several hints on social media that he may be working on a follow-up, as we reported last week.

So, in what seems to be a worrying trend in franchise films, Saw XI also has a case of “creative shake-up” syndrome. It will be quite interesting to see how this sequel progresses and we’ll keep an eye out for further updates.
