The games are set to begin again sooner than we thought…
On Thursday July 20th we got our first look at Saw X and the return of Tobin Bell’s infamous Jigsaw Killer John Kramer.
Lionsgate released an image of Bell scowling into the camera, cast in that eerie blue tint that’s immediately identifiable as Saw’s signature hue.
Alongside this first look, we got the news that the movie’s release date has been moved up to Friday September 9th 2023. This moves Saw X forward a month from its original October 27th date and out of the Halloween season release window that has traditionally been the series’ calling card. Reasoning behind this change may have to do with just how crowded the October slate is becoming, with Lionsgate themselves going head-to-head with The Exorcist Believer on October 13th with Dear David. Likely, Saw X has been pushed forward in a bid to give it the best chance possible with audiences and avoid it being swamped by other genre releases.
Along with our first look and new release date, we also got the official synopsis for Saw X, reading as follows:
“John Kramer (Tobin Bell) is back, and it’s the untold chapter of Jigsaw’s final games. Set between the events of Saw I and II, a sick and desperate John travels to Mexico for a risky and experimental medical procedure in hopes of a miracle cure for his cancer – only to discover the entire operation is a scam to defraud the most vulnerable. The infamous serial killer returns to his work, turning the tables on the con artists in his signature visceral way through devious, deranged, and ingenious traps.”
Alongside Bell, Saw X will also see the return of series favourite Shawnee Smith as Amanda Young, and will include a cast of fresh meat including Renata Vaca, Michael Beach, Synnøve Macody Lund, Octavio Hinojosa, Paulette Hernandez, and Joshua Okamoto.
Franchise alum Kevin Greutert returns to direct, from a script by Jigsaw scribes Josh Stolberg and Peter Goldfinger, so we know we’re in safe hands. See you September 29th!
