We really hate to say we told you, but…

Unfortunately, after we’ve speculated for months, we can now confirm that the remake of Stephen King’s Salem’s Lot will skip its planned theatrical release and head directly to streaming.

Slightly overshadowed by the Scream announcements, the long-in-gestation reboot of King’s 1975 classic will now debut on Warner Bros. Max service.

This news comes just weeks after creator Stephen King called out Warner on social media. To his followers, King confided the following:
“Between you and me, Twitter, I’ve seen the new SALEM’S LOT and it’s quite good. Old-school horror filmmaking: slow build, big payoff. Not sure why WB is holding it back; not like it’s embarrassing, or anything. Who knows. I just write the fucking things.”

It was hoped that, given King’s words, the studio would issue an update. Last we heard was at the very end of 2023, with Warner and New Line Cinema saying only that Salem’s Lot was “still on the release schedule.”

However, now we unfortunately have confirmation of what has been suspected for months.

Principal photography on the reboot, directed by Gary Dauberman, initially wrapped in the fall of 2021. Reshoots took place the following June, gunning for a Labour Day release. This was then bumped back to “Spring 2023,” before Salem’s Lot disappeared completely.

After 3 years, we are now told the film will premiere on Max “sometime in 2024.” Still, that sounds rather vague.

Salem’s Lot is produced by James Wan and stars Lewis Pullman, Alfre Woodard, and Spencer Treat Clark, among others.

We’ll let you know if we receive a more concrete streaming date.
